Hi,

I want to upgrade the CPU on my intel D865 PERL motherboard. The CPU I will
be installing is Intel Prescott 3.0Ghz 478 socket 90nm etc. The question I
have is that do I need to do anything to update the BIOS or is the BIOS
supposed to update itself and detect the new CPU automatically when I turn on
the machine. Please help.

The chart here will tell you the minimum BIOS revision required.
Flash a newer BIOS using the original processor, if the chart
tells you your current BIOS is too old for your new processor.

The latest BIOS is RL86510A.86A.0089.P21.05021322020

Thanks so much! The BIOS on my m/c is RL86510A.86A.0073.P14 so as per
http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/rl/rl_proc.htm there should be no need
to update it although I don't have the latest version, correct? One more
thing: I was going through the docs and it says there is a jumper that can be
set to two modes: configuration and normal (
http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/rl/rl_confg.htm). The jumper setting on
the motherboard is normal right now. Do I leave it as it is when I replace
the CPU?

BIOS should automatically recognize the processor change. If you have a
very early BIOS version, there's the possibility that the CPU wouldn't be
fully supported. In that case, get the latest BIOS version from Intel at
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scr...XP+Professional&lang=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go!
for your board (version P21 is the latest.)

You should be fine. If there's a problem and some particular setting in
your BIOS doesn't play nicely with the new processor, the configuration
jumper position, if set after powering off and unplugging your computer,
will set your BIOS to automatically open and set default settings upon the
next powerup of your computer.

hi

Thank you so much. So I understand there is no need to change the jumper
settings. What are the precautions I should take while changing the CPU? How
to prevent ESD damage? Any thing else I should know? What can go wrong and
how to be preared for it? Once again I really appreciate your help.
