I just bought a new computer with XP Home pre installed. I then bought a
Upgrade to XP Pro and when i try to upgrade the install programe for Pro sais
that a newer version of windows is already on my computer and wont let me
pick any option other then to cancel the install.

How can i get XP pro installed?

Your current install probably has either SP1 or SP2 already on it. If
that's the case, you need to either remove the SP or upgrade using a
slipstreamed XP Pro disk that already has the latest SP integrated. If
you have a CD burner you can create your own slipstreamed XP Pro upgrade
CD using the XP Pro CD that you purchased. See
http://nuhi.msfn.org/download.html for a free tool to create the
slipstream disk using your XP Pro disk plus the SP2 full download file
available from MS at

XP Home really doesnt upgrade to Pro,with or w/o SP2,simply install xp pro
cd,
exit the info page, restart computer, boot to xp cd,then select
recovery,press enter
for password,then type:DiskPart In DiskPart,delete the partition (C: xp
home),
create one, then press Esc Then type:FORMAT C: /FS:ntfs When thru type:
EXIT Restart, then reboot to xp cd,this time select install xp.

Huh? You can absolutely upgrade XP Home to XP Pro.

Your computer likely came with SP 2 pre-installed, and your XP Pro CD does
not have SP 2. That's why you can't upgrade. You need to have an XP Pro CD
with SP 2.

Have you tried running it as Repair Install? You might be able to upgrade
that way. See How To Run a Repair Install at this link
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm If you current setup has a SP1
or SP2 installed then a Repair Install will strip out the service pack and
you will need to reinstall SPs and Critical Updates again it afterward.
