I have recently upgraded to XP from Windows 98. I am having such memory
problems! I have 8.78 GB used space and only 774 MB free right now (and
that's good.) I have 320 RAM so I am not sure what the problem is. I have
defragmented and cleaned up my disk space many times. I have deleted any
programs I haven't used recently. Does anyone have any other suggestions??
I am at a complete loss.
THANKS!

First of all, note that you are confusing memory with disk space.
The word "memory" refers to the amount of RAM you have (in your
case, 320MB, as you said) and that has nothing to do with how
much free disk space you have.

You apparently have a 10GB hard drive, and you have only 774MB of
it still free. This is *disk space*, as opposed to memory. That's
where your problem apparently is.

The smallest hard drive you can buy these days is 40GB. Your 10GB
drive is tiny by todays standards, and it's not at all surprising
that you have so little left. A 10GB drive is really
insufficeient for running todays operating systems and
applications.

Defragmenting is irrelevant. It rearranges the used portions of
the drive so access to it is faster, but it does nothing about
using less space.

Uninstalling programs may help some, but it's at best a stopgap
measure. Sooner or later (and probably sooner rather than later)
you will have to face up to the fact that your drive is tiny and
you need to buy another larger one.

Thanks Ken. I appreciate your info and I realize I need to upgrade all
around! Thanks again.

Doug and Bruce suggested you upgrade your hard drive which is precisely what
you should do. XP takes a lot of resources. However here are a couple of
things you can do in the interim.

1) Reduce the size of System Restore or Disable it completely - Go to
Control Panel->System Properties->System Restore Tab. You can change the
size of the cache or simply disable it. If you need to backup the registry
use ERUNT (google search) which will enable you to make a registry backup
similar to what Win98 did.

2) If you upgraded from Windows 98 to XP and do not plan to revert back to
Windows 98 you can delete the backup that XP created during setup
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308008

3) Go to Control Panel->Display Properties->ScreenSaver Tab->Power
button->Hibernation Tab and ensure the box is unchecked.
