Hey All

I have a couple of simple questions for anybody. I found a good deal on an E-Machine that has all the system hardware requirements I need (for the multi-media stuff). However, it came with Windows XP Home edition installed as the default OS. Here are my questions

1) Besides the obvious differences between XP Home and XP PRO posted all over the Microsoft web site , what are the differences between XP Pro and XP Multimedia Editions? The url to a website that can provide answers to this question would be great

2) I haven't been able to find an upgrade path to move from Windows XP Home Edition to Windows XP Multimedia Edition. Am i looking at a complete uninstall and reinstall (and the sales guy lied)....or is there a Microsoft web site somewhere, that I just have not found, that has a "FREE" download/upgrade that will solve my Multi-media delimma

Thanks for any direction or input that comes my way

Greetings --

WinXP Media Center Edition is a _superset_ (iow, it does
_everything_ WinXP Pro can do, plus contains additional features) of
WinXP Pro. Additionally, Windows XP Media Center Edition is not
available for retail sale. WinXP MCE is available *only* as a
pre-installed OEM installation on specifically designed PCs.

At the moment, I believe that the Multimedia edition is only available to
OEMs - though I guess that it will eventually be available to everyone.

At the moment, there is no specific (cheap) upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro:
you have to purchase the upgrade version that covers Window98, Me, NT, etc.,
to Windows XP Pro.

There is Digital Media Plus Edition (which is a Plus pack for your
existing Windows XP OS).

Some, if not all, of the MCE functionality, can be attained by third
party hardware and software solutions.

If this you mean Windows XP Media Center Edition
[http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/evaluation/default.asp] it
would require a reinstallation. If the machine did not come with Media Edition,
it is not adviseable to install it, as it is very hardware specific e.g. it
requires a remote control.

FYI -- my husband purchased a Gateway Media Center PC over the holidays. We
have already uncovered a number of bugs... and after HOURS with Gateway and
reviewing the Microsoft Knowledge Base -- reformatted the hard drive (which
was no fun after uploading multiple gigs of mp3 files and photos.

Dear Hubby has 20+ years of experience with PC's and is fairly knowledgeable
and has been pulling his hair out over this version of Windows... things are
fairly complicated and I have heard him repeat multiple times... "this is
not ready for the masses... if it is this hard to figure out for me!"

After todays reformat and reinstall of EVERYTHING.... we'll see how long
before it crashes again!

Keep smiling!

I hope you husband created a partition for your MP3 and
other files so you can reformat and reinstall on C: while
leaving the other data safely on a partition.
