Hi.
I have read on this forum that it is better to format the hard drive
when installing a new o/s.

I have a pc that is running on win98 se, an i would like to upgrade to win 2k, However i am a little daunted about formatting my hard drive,

Could somone please explain what is involved an what i would need to do.

Thanks for any advice you can offer

If you have never formatted before, this is one thing you will have to read up on - as it is a permanent thing.

Basically, when you format you will be wiping everything off your PC and starting again (windows included). You will need to make sure you have the Windows 2000 CD's (which should be bootable).

Be sure to back everything up on your PC which you might need - like documents, pictures, important information etc...

With Windows 2000, you may be lucky as it comes with a newer installer. You might need to simply place the CD in your computer when you first turn your PC on, and it should come up with some automated prompts asking you to Install Windows 2000 and if it should format your PC first. You will then have a "fresh" installation of Windows 2000 on your PC.

Try booting your PC up with the first Windows 2000 CD in and see what it says, you can always cancel up until the point of format!

Hope that helps :)
