Upgrade xp Getting legal

F

Frank

I have a friend, yes, it really is a friend, whom I have finally convinced
that he needs to get legal with xp. He has the corp illegal version. He only
needs xp home. I was going to walk him through a repair upgrade so he
doesn't have to reinstall all his programs etc. He is not too PC literate.
Will the repair upgrade work and remove the illegal version? I have done the
repair upgrade quite a few times and it always worked well, but never to a
system with an illegal version. Any thoughts or experience?
Thanks
Frank

Bar,
I appreciate the response, I meant repair install, not repair upgrade.
Sorry. A Repair Install will replace the system files with the files on the
XP CD used for the Repair Install. It will leave your applications and
settings intact, but Windows updates will need to be reapplied. Anyway, I
advised him to purchase xp home(after months of debate) He cannot afford xp
pro and doesn't need it. So my question still remains?
Thanks

The repair upgrade is a non-existent term.

Windows installation process can be selected to repair an installation
or
Windows Installation can Upgrade - if one uses XP Pro Upgrade Version [retail]

Your friends PC will have no problems being Upgarded from XP Pro [copied] to XP Pro Upgrade [retail].

He should be concerned that he does have in his posession a true and vaild
product from Microsoft which qualifies him to use the Upgarde version of XP

You can't install home over pro, it would have to be a clean install.

I kind of figured that, just wanted a second and third opinion. Guess I'll
be spending some time on the phone.
Thanks very much,

Greetings --

The only way to change from WinXP Pro to WinXP Home is to
format the drive and start over. There is no supported downgrade path
or technique.

Simply boot from the WinXP Home installation CD. You'll be
offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as
part of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the
order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
