My office tells me I need xp pro for a domain problem that
xp home can not handle.
Will upgrading to pro format my entire hard disk forcing
me to start over loading my xp home programs and settings
for my sony laptop? The computer is brand new and its
back-up programs are only on a d: drive. I am especially
woried about the set-up of my wireless 80211b which came
with the system.
Or, will all of my stuff stay as it is and only the
operating system be updated.

Your office is correct about the Domain problem as Home doesn't have Domain
support.

You should not have any worries upgrading from home to pro as it is in the
upgrade path. It will leave all of your former settings alone.

but always backup your important stuff first JUST IN CASE.

You can do it either way. You will be prompted to make the
choice. If you clean install, you will start from scratch. If you
upgrade, you will keep everything you already have.

But note that there are no guarantees. Even if you upgrade, it's
prudent to make sure you have a backup of anything you can't
afford to lose.
