Upgrade to XP (not)

Peter

To upgrade my old machine to XP means it needs more
memory than 64 MB. Which means a new motherboard to get
to 256 MB. Which means a new case, because they don't
make boards like they used to. And a new keyboard, and a
new mouse, because they don't make mother boards like
they used to. And junk the sound card, because they
don't make mother boards like they used to. And junk the
modem, too. I can salvage the 6GB disk, current value
about $6. And Office 97, now obsolete, but it came pre-
installed without a CD so it can't be re-installed. To
heck with it.

128 MBs of RAM is recommended for Windows XP and 233 Mhz processor or
higher. Office 97 does run on XP. What you need is to find out what type of
RAM your motherboard uses and get 128.

Well, he can buy a brand AMD 64 Machine in March when Windows XP
Professional x64 Edition is released.

It sounds like you need an upgrade even if you don't
upgrade to XP. The hardware you have sounds like it is
in the jewelry catagory, you should take the CPU out,
drill a small hole in it and put it on a charm bracelet!

Hmm

Heh, wait until PCI Express (for video cards) comes out
as standard. Everything just keeps advancing as time
goes by. PCI Express is faster than PCI even at its
slower speed (x1). PCI Express (x16) is faster than the
AGP. Surely this would even improve over time.

Why?

As bad as Windows XP is when it comes to security, I don't
want to even think what a Windows 9x/ME system would rank!
Dude, if you're concerned at all with web security...
anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall, etc.... you need to
bite the bullet and upgrade to a modern OS.

With what you got now, what in heaven's name is the point
of you running Anti-spyware software? You have more
secuity holes than a dutch boy has fingers. Don't even bother.

And obviously you haven't thought about 98. Been running
for over a year - heavy Internet use - Cable connection
always on - NO ANTI-VIRUS. (armed to the teeth against
spyware, though) Try THAT on XP.
