Hi, just bought a new system and have my new and old hard
drives in the new tower. The new drive has XP on it, the
old one ME. I have my entire musical work and writing and
webpage files on the old drive but it seems that I can't
access half of these files. My new system boots in XP.
When I try to retrieve old files from the other drive I
keep getting messages saying the files are unreadable, or
it just won't even open the file. It's like it says it's
invalid or not recognized. I'm so upset because this is a
lot of my work and I'm scared its all wrecked.

Is this common when trying to read old files or copy them
onto the XP drive. I'm trying to open and copy files from
the old ME drive onto the new XP drive but face constant
error messages. They are both in the same tower, making
it dual boot? It doesn't ask me what drive I want or OS I
want to run, it just shows both the drives in MY COMPUTER
(C: and E:) when XP is up and running. Pls help. Fallon

Hi, Fallon.

Don't worry. It's not wrecked. You just need to figure out what's causing
the problem with trying to read the files from that drive. WinXP should
have no problem at all reading from any FAT32 or NTFS volume on any hard
drive properly installed in your computer.

Simply having the WinME files on Drive E: does not make this a dual-boot
system. That phrase means that both WinME and WinXP are actually installed,
and an opening menu will be presented each time you boot. As I understand
your system, you don't have a dual-boot system - and don't need one.

Which program were you using to create your musical work and other files in
WinME? Have you installed that same program while booted to WinXP? Simply
having the program files available (on Drive E:) is not enough; the
application must be installed from WinXP so that it can write its proper
entries into the WinXP Registry. Once that is done, you should be able to
start the program and use all your files. You can either copy the files to
your new drive, or use them from the old drive. You can even open them from
the old drive and save them to the new one.

In My Computer, if you right-click on Drive E: and click Properties, what
does it tell you? Have you found Disk Management yet? What does it tell
you about your drives? When you moved your original HD to the secondary
position, did you change any jumpers or other physical settings on the
drive? Are you using the proper cables for the drives? Tell us more about
your computer and hard drive configuration and we probably can help you
figure this out.

The more you tell us - about your computer, your hard drives, and your
programs - the better chance we have of helping you.

Ok, so I'm learning! Thank-you!
So it's not a dual boot, the two drives are together in
my tower but my system boots into XP and I can use both
drives for files, saving, etc...

When I look at the properties of C: and E: they are BOTH
formatted for FAT32 file system. The files I am trying
to pull over (so far) are Macromedia Fireworks .png files
(for my website) and .acd files for Sonic Foundry Acid
4.0.

I have tried copying them, no go. Opening them from the
old drive INTO the new installation of ACID on the XP
drive, and it just won't open them. I've tried copying
whole folders, nope. Some files will open, others won't
and it says this:

File E:\Old Drive C\songs\mellow tune with vocals.acd
could not be opened. File is not a supported format.

When I try to copy and paste form one drive to the other
it says this:

Cannot copy "X", cannot read from the source file or disk.

What the heck? Some work and some don't. They're .acd
and .png files associated with ACID and FIREWORKS
respectively.

Thanks for your help.

Hi, Fallon.

OK. It sounds like you've got it set up right physically, so the problem
must be in software.

I haven't used either Macromedia Fireworks or Sonic Foundry Acid, so I
can't help on any quirks in those programs. But, since you have Acid
installed in WinXP, you should be able to open the files from the old HD
with no hassle at all.
File E:\Old Drive C\songs\mellow tune with vocals.acd
could not be opened. File is not a supported format.

This sounds like a message from Acid, not from WinXP. Windows doesn't try
to Open the file; it just moves it without any idea of the format. Are you
using a later version of Acid on WinXP than the version that created the
file in WinME? Some applications convert older files automatically when
they are opened in a newer version; others require us to run a conversion
program. Perhaps this particular file was created a generation (of Acid) or
two ago. (I'm grasping at straws since, as I said, I know nothing of Acid.)
When I try to copy and paste form one drive to the other
it says this:

Are you actually using Copy and Paste to copy files? How about if you use
your mouse to drag'n'drop the files to the new drive? It sounds like you
know all about this, but sometimes I assume too much. Open both old and new
folders in two windows on your Desktop. Right-click-and-drag the file or
folder and choose Copy from the pop-up menu - don't choose Move so that the
original won't be deleted from the old drive until you are sure the copy on
the new drive is good.

Have you tried opening a "DOS" window and using the Copy or Xcopy command
from there? What error message do you get?

I hope someone who knows about Fireworks and Acid can jump in here with some
better ideas.

RC

RC,
thanks for the time you've put into this. Yes I've also
tried drag n'drop. Can you tell me (step by step) how to
try copy in DOS? I'm not familiar with doing things in
DOS.

Will try anything at this point.

I managed to get the program to recognize one of the
songs, then it finally wouldn't open it or put the tracks
on the rack and it gave me this error:

Dopes this mean there is software problems? Can't figure
out why Fireworiks is doing it too?

To change disk:
D:

To change directory:
e.g.

CD "\Documents and Settings"

To copy a file:

Copy file1.txt file2.txt

To copy a file to another directory
from current directory.

Copy file1.txt c:\anotherdir

To copy a file from one directory to another

Copy c:\directory1\file1.txt c:\anotherdir

To copy all files from one directory to another

Copy c:\directory1\*.* c:\anotherdir

etc
