Hi All,
I currently run a w2k network and need to upgrade to windows 2003 domain.
My concern is with the upgrade path for all my DCs. I have four DCs that I
need to upgrade.
How complicated will it be to do a clean install of all my DCs one after the
other and maintain the same domain name structure.
Any suggestions on clean install versus upgrade?
Thanks

The following article covers the upgrade process petty throughly, and I
assume from your willingness to re-install that they are not also running
apps etc that will also need to be reinstalled if you don't just upgrade
them. Upgrade should work fine, but if you want to do a clean install, that
will work as well.
You'd need to demote one, let that demotion replicate to the others before
re-introducing the reinstalled one again (assuming you'll be using the same
name again).
At some point the fsmo roles will also need to be transfered to one of the
new 2k3 dc's as well as one/some being made gc's, and dns set up as well.

I am facing a similar situation with 4 2000 servers, all running AD. I have
an MS project guide that says I need to introduce a 2003 Member server and
then DCpromo it to upgrade my AD to 2003.

Can I not just choose a 2000 DC and upgrade it? Given that I follow the
necessary prerequisites?

I am planning on upgrading my Exchange server to EX 2003, then upgrading it
(being a DC) to Win 2k3 afterwards. Is this a good idea?

Thanks,
Josh

Your way should work fine as well. I would assume that they were just
trying to make things as absolutely clean as possible with a clean/new
install instead of upgrading.
I have to beg off on the exch question though as I really don't know the ins
and outs of all that, so you may want to post something in their newsgroups
and should get an answer.

Just in case you didn't have it;
