I upgraded this weekend from windows 98 to windows xp pro. The initial
upgrade went perfectly. However...
I logged the computer off after the upgrade. When I turned the computer
back on the computer went through a chkdsk/scandisk like process as if I had
not logged on successfully. It then presented the message that it was
starting windows; it brought up the opening screen and then proceeded to
reboot itselt and go through the scandisk process again. I allowed it to do
this 3 times before I intervened and tried to stop the scandisk process.
Nevertheless, it rebooted again and did the same. I am able to run in safe
mode, but I don't know what should be changed to prevent scandisk from
running over and over.
Note: I ran a virus checker and a spyware checker before upgrading. I don't
think that is the problem. I do know that I was unable to run scandisk
before the upgrade. The windows 98 message said that I needed to update the
himem parameter. (Which I did--to no effect). How can I bypass this
scandisk process?
