Upgrade to WD Leaves Remnants of Microsoft Anti-Spyware.

The upgrade to WD from Microsoft Anti-Spyware left over 100 Registry entries
referring to Microsoft Anti-Spyware, mostly CLSIDs and TypeLibs, and some
files of it in .\Program Files\Microsoft Anti-Spyware folder.

Can these be safley removed?

Shouldn't the Upgrade have done it automatically for us?

Hello XRaySpeX,

Yes, you can delete that folder,

REMOVING BETA 1
Whatever you do, (installing and updateting or unistalling) always as a
administrator.

This needs to be run in safe mode.

Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel. Click Microsoft AntiSpyware and
click Change. Click Next, and then click Remove.

In Windows Programs files, delete all the sub-directorys and the folder MSAS.

Delete in Windows\system 32 :
GcColetion.dll
Hashlib.dll
GcUnCompress.dll
GcTypLibA.tbl
GcAntiSpywareLib.dll
GcUserData.gcg

Also, delete in Windows\Downloaded Installations, any reference about MSAS.

You can use Ccleaner (Twice).
http://www.ccleaner.com/downloadbuilds.asp
Note, uncheck Yahoos toolbar during install.
Try to install, the slim version.

Run the above remover in safe mode Ccleaner on all 3 settings(windows, apps &
issues) and clear anything found, reboot and see if it still exists.

Done.

You can safely remove the folder left behind. I don't consider hand editing
the registry safe, so I'm not going to speak to that.

As to whether these items should be removed by the uninstall--one possible
reason for their being left behind is that they may allow for the retrieval
from quarantine of possibly valuable data. I really can't speculate
usefully about the true purpose of leaving entries behind, but I've observed
that most applications seem to do it.

Thanks, Engel, this is useful.

What about manually removing the Registry entries referring to Microsoft
Anti-Spyware/Giant S/W, mostly CLSIDs and TypeLibs? I'm not keen on these
Registry Cleaners; I like more control over what they do.

ALSO, Please clarify points embedded below :-

CAN'T DO THIS; ALREADY GONE FROM UPGRADE TO WD.

If you want a "supported" registry cleaner, Microsoft has one as part of a
comprehensive scan (you can hit custom somewhere in the dialogs and pick and
choose) at safety.live.com.

Be forwarned, however, that I've seen just as many complaints that "stuff
breaks" after using this cleaner as I have about other cleaners--I don't
think any automated registry cleaner is absolutely safe.
