Hi,
I got another computer which has just been upgraded to Pentium IV, then
when I put my old hard disk in, it just couldn't boot up again, and turns
into blue screen. What could be the cause of the problem? and how can I
solve it?
Also, I tried to install a fresh copy of window XP, then it boots up fine,
but after I installed the cable modem driver, whenever I surf the internet,
it turns into blue screen again, does anyone know why?
Thanks.

Hi,

Blue screens are our friends. They tell us what is wrong. What does yours
say?

What else was upgraded besides the processor. New motherboard? Sounds
like, without additional details that are provided on the bluescreen
error, that you need to do a repair install of XP. This will allow it to
re-enumerate all the hardware devices.

The fact that a fresh copy works confirms somewhat my thought on doing a
repair install on the existing copy. As far as this second blue screen,
again the details please. What is the information regarding the location
of the crash, file involved, etc. Since it happened after you installed
your modem driver, that's an obvious point to start. Check the
manufacturer's web site to see if they have an updated driver. Have you
checked device manager to make sure it says everything is working
correctly as far as the modem and other devices? You don't say what
brand, type of cable modem you are using, so I can't offer any product
specific suggestions or help.

I'd try going into the BIOS and using some "safe setting" or somesuch, if
your BIOS has this. It could well be timing issues with the bus' and the
faster CPU. Did you upgrade the memory at the same time?

NO, SHOW ME A P3 Based motherboard with a P4 processor
of course motherboard upgrade, dudes
sure thing XP won't boot
different MB, different IDE controller drivers etc....XP is smart....not
smart enough

reinstall XP onto CLEAN hard
install all device drivers
go to modem manufacturer site and download a new version of the driver
install all windows updates

When you say upgraded to a Pentium IV, not a faster Pentium IV, so I assume
thnat you used to have a Pentium II, II, or maybe an AMD? If so, you
probably have a new motherboard, with new RAM, with new disk controllers,
with new USB, with new NIC, etc, etc. In short, you have a totally new PC.
I suggest that you format and do a fresh install of XP. After XP is
installed, be sure to have the latest drivers for all hardware, whether on
the motherboard or otherwise. But, first check that the hardware is
compatible with XP. Some older hardware may not work. If incompatibl, do
not attach to the PC. Also check all software you plan to install, since
many products hav XP-specific patches, or in so cases require whole new
versions.

THX GUYS. I should have provide more detail.
Actually, everything stay the same except the new motherboard and CPU, I
upgraded from PIII to PIV with a compatible motherboard.

The error message that I got was 0x1e, and I can't reproduce the error since
I refunded my motherboard and CPU ^^" after a bit of struggling... But I
really want to find out why, so that i can solve the problem next time.

Window XP should recognize all my hardware, since they work fine before the
upgrade, I only upgraded the mb and CPU. And the cable modem is And the
"Motorola SB4200 SURFboard cable modem", the driver is the updated one, it
also works fine beforehand. And all the hardware driver should have no
problem working with windows XP. What could be the problem?? THX.
