I have upgraded to office 2003 but am now unable to open
some of my earlier powerpoint presentations.

I can't seem to isolate why some open and others will
not. I get an error message: "PowerPoint can't read [file
path and file name]

Anyone else seeing this?

Was your previous version PowerPoint 2000? There is a recently discovered
problem with presentations created/saved in PowerPoint 2000 and opened in
PowerPoint 2003. They are working on a fix, but there is no estimate of
when it will be available. In the meantime the recommended work around is
to open the presentation in PowerPoint 2002 (yes, that's right) and save it.
Then it will open correctly in PowerPoint 2003. This problem is not
specific to PowerPoint 2003 and also impacts Word and Excel, so I'm sure
that it is getting a very high priority from Microsoft.

I have exactly the same problem, some PPT2000 files will open in PPT2003 and
some won't, and I get the same error message you get. I opened a thread in
this group about it, and the only solution I was given was the one Sonia is
telling you. I hope Microsoft can fix this asap.

Dee, check for updates on Monday or Tuesday next week. There should be a
fix available to the public very soon now. On the PowerPoint 2003 Help
menu, click on "Check for Updates".

I can't believe this made it past Beta...

Opening in Powerpoint 2002 and resaving is not an option available to
me.

I consider this to be a MAJOR, MAJOR problem given that I collaborate
with many people on presentations and they potentially have PPT 2000.

Please fix this ASAP...
