Can anyone tell me if there is a easier way to upgrade
and replace a harddrive in WindowsXP? I want to replace
the existing 30MB Drive w/an 80MB 7200 Drive (maxtor) and
I'm running into snags; My XP program doesn't have the
NTbackup and can't find it on the original XP CD, to make
recovery disks; I thought I could make the recovery disks
with Norton Ghost but it was taking forever, I was
discouraged when I got to the 3rd disk and it was only 7%
done.
I have used Win98 (XP I've been using a year) and
transferring/reformatting etc. info seemed a whole user
friendly to me.
Is there an easier less time consuming answer or help??
(instead of having to order recovery disks..)

Any more information is GREATLY APPRECIATED!!

If you have a CD writer, use Norton Ghost. But, boot the computer with the
Norton Ghost floppies, and burn a ghost image of your hard drive on CD's.
(use high compression). Then install the new hard drive. Boot off the ghost
floppies again and put the CD image on the new hard drive.
This may take an hour. If you've never done it, maybe two.

Maxtor makes MaxBlast 3, a program that automatically installs a new Maxtor
drive and copies data to it. If it doesn't come with your new Maxtor drive,
you can download a version of it from the Maxtor web site.

I upgraded from a Maxtor 20GB to a 40GB. I have a lot of
files. The way to do it that is cost effective is to set
up your old drive as a "SLAVE" and the new drive
as "MASTER". Then in the maxblast software that runs as
you boot you can copy an "IMAGE" of your old drive
the "SLAVE" TO THE "MASTER". Pro-it copies it all and will
run fine after. Con-slow takes hours depending on the
number and file size. In the old days it was fast but no
more. I will say this though let it run and go do
something else. It does work and I have done it MANY
times. Floppies are not the way. They have drive cloners-
but they run about $1200.00.
