Ok......I want to upgrade my system by changing the MB and processor,
and memory.....and I intend to "build" it in a new case with a larger
psu. I want to use my existing drives and cards, including 2 HDs and
2cd/rw drives. I also want to use the OS that came with the system I
have. I am gathering that I will have to reinstall the OS, but it is
on a "recovery disk". Can I use the disk? If not, can anyone point me
to information about the easiest way to migrate what I have......?

I am upgrading from an AMD 1.2 to an AMD 2500+, and my OS is WinME (I
know, I should just toss it and get a real OS, but it's what I have,
for now)
Any help would be appreciated.

First I have to say that the propagation of this 'ME' bull is remarkable,Its
a decent OS if you know how to install and be picky about drivers, as XP
does that for you. ANYWAY, the biggest problem you will have is any OB sound
and the chipset drivers. With 'me' I like to delete the 'enum' key in the
registry under hkey_local machine, and then immediately shut down. install
the HD in the new box and it will redetect all the hardware. After all is
done check the device manager, you may have a few duplicates. delete both
entries that are the same(if any) without rebooting each time. when they are
all clean, reboot, and the system will fix all. If you have the
c:/windows/options folder you can burn it to a CD and have a ME install
disk, providing the manufacturer didn't lame it.

Should not be a problem, I do this all the time. I uninstall any mobob
drives (eg, Via 4 in 1), on board sound drivers and any peripherals specific
to the old system which would include onboard video if you have it. If
exeternal, video and sound they can probably be left as they were.

Your new sys should automatically detect the HDDs and start up direct from
the old OS. You will have to intstall the specific mobo drivers required.

I suggest doing a clean install. It will save you a lot of problems and
headaches. Besides, you must do a clean install for Windows to be able to
take advantage of the SSE instructions in the AMD XP2500.
