Upgrade problems

I just upgraded, switching from AMD on an Abit motherboard
to Intel P4 on an Intel board. The only other difference
is the type and amount of RAM. All other components were
transferred from the old system, including the WD 80 gig
hard drive (only one partition) with my Windows XP Pro and
all my programs.

When I POST the system I get no beeps. The blue Intel
motherboard screen comes up and then it goes to a black
background screen with a rather long message starting
out "We're sorry for the inconvenience......". It goes on
to say the problem could have been caused by a change in
hardware or software, etc. etc. and gives me several
options to restart using normal, safe mode, command prompt
and about two others I can't recall. I almost get the
impression it can't find the OS. Anyway, I have chosen
all the options and end up right back to the same screen
with the same options. I am able to get into the setup
and everything appears normal (although I'm not real
familiar with Intel's setup menus yet). All the voltages
appear to be in spec and the temperatures are reasonable.

Is there something I need to do with XP? This is the
first time I have swapped out a processor and mobo using
the old hard drive including programs and OS. When I put
the old system back together and fired it up I got some
strange prompts indicating there were inconsistencies in
my hard drive, some drivers could not be found and my
broadband service was not working. I was able to work
through all these and everything APPEARS to be back in
order. Where did I go wrong and how do I remedy it?

Yes, you need to do a Repair Install. XP will rarely move from one motherboard to another and boot, due to the difference in IDE controller chipsets (primarily) and other factors that make the installed HAL.DLL obsolete.

Many thanks for the info. I'll go to your site and check
it out.
