Hi,

When I try to upgrade to Windows Vista Home basic the installation runs to
the "completing installation" stage and pauses for at least 10 hrs. I have
disabled my virus scanner and firewall.

Does anyone know a workaround for this?

Many thanks.

You don't need to wait that long -- maybe 10 minutes or so is long
enough. I'm guessing that you have some kind of device that Vista
doesn't have a driver for. Some things to consider: unplug any
peripheral devices, especially USB devices, during the install.
Check the computer manufacturer's website to see if there is a
BIOS update for your machine. Try a clean install rather than
upgrading your existing OS (XP?). You may need to shrink an
existing partition on your hard disk and create a new partition
for the clean Vista install (this is allowed by your upgrade
license).
