I am looking to build a new PC early next year.
My current machine has a 9800 Pro and I was wondering what ATI PCIe
cards would give me a performance boost without a big drain on the
wallet?
Any suggestions please?

If 9800 = X700, then bigger number cards are better. The limit is your
budget, of course. X800 seem to be getting more and more reasonable.

nVidia 7800 GT ... 24 Pixel pipelines. ATI's only have up to 16.

I said without a big drain on the wallet....
And lets be honest, I have been ATI for years now, and I doubt I am
suddenly going to switch over to nVidia just for a few extra
pipelines. Speed isn't everything you know... ^_^

No, speed isn't everything... but there are three points of technology that make
up for speed, which are amount of RAM(1) as 256 bit interface(2) and pixel
pipelines(3). Those things are just about 85% of everything in performance.

I have gone from Voodoo 3 3000 (GREAT card) to GeForce II GTS (totally
sucked) to NV GF 4 Ti4600 (pretty decent card) to the new x800xl (great
card), and nothing has matched-up to it, but it does not match-up to a 7800
GT. nVidia designs their systems to very well balanced these days, and you
shouldn't be a fanboy, seriously.

It isn't a matter of being a fanboy (certainly not at my age ^_^)
Currently nVidia are ahead on speed, but in the end, all out speed
isn't my primary concern. I am more interested in being able to play
the latest games at a decent speed, but more importantly at a price to
suit my wallet. How big that turns out to be depends on how much
Christmas bonus I get......

okay so the x800 x850 are a tad pricey. You won't have to be looking to
upgrade your video cards for a good while yet. That saves money every six
months. Peanut butter is good food.

the return on your investment (ROI if you will) with these graphics cards:
fast enough to turn up your game settings to "Toy story" effects in games
where you'd think the frame rate would get boggled down, nope no bog. Will
pull your somewhat slow PC up into the fast lane and extend the life time of
your PC (you won't have to do a major upgrade) so soon.

The first time you run a game or (heaven forbid) a spreadsheet you'll see
every dollar worth of speed and beautiful graphics - okay i lied about the
spreadsheet. GAMES ! you got to see to believe.

** note: the above is not an actual advertisement for ATI, nor is it
intended to make NVIDIA jealous (you shouldn't make fun of the challenged).
Just a satisfied customer. Yes I would NOT put a x850 agp card into a .....
of course agp slot.
I have the x800 agp and me thinks i am at the limit of bandwidth end of agp
useful life - agp card was worth the money ou's and awe's abound! - however;
then putting the x850 pcie into a Pentium D machine really really made the
x800 seem like a 9800pro.
I am through with agp (well not until this agp fails, see url above (no
advertising there)(no smoking website).

so my upgrade path was ATI 9800pro to x800 agp , x850 pcie. going back is
out of the question. My next choice has to be "crossfire" now doesn't it.

hope this helps,

Okay that's clear, I_shoulda_paida_tension_intha_1st_place!

SO SAVE UP!!

Thanks for the replies everyone. I am hoping that by the time I have
the money to build my next PC, the X800s or even the 850s will have
come closer to my imagined price point. I think that the real info I
was looking for was which cards are an actual upgrade from my trusty
9800pro, and now I know it would probably need to X800 or higher.

Thanks again.
