I have NT 4.0 and would like to get to W2000 or XP, but it seems the
only way to do this is to use the professional upgrade to these
products. Is there some way to do this to the home versions?

There is no Windows 2000 home edition. Windows 2000 Professional is the
lowest level and it is the equivalent of NT Workstation. This can be
installed as an upgrade from Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 3.51
Workstation and Windows NT 4 Workstation.

Windows 2000 Server can be installed as an upgrade for Windows NT 3.51
(without Citrix software installed), Windows NT Server 4.0 (Enterprise and
Terminal Server Editions).

Windows XP Home Edition can be installed as an upgrade for Windows 98 and
Windows Millennium.
Windows XP Professional can be installed as an upgrade for Windows 98,
Windows Millennium, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP
Home Edition.
Windows XP cannot upgrade any server operating system.

These are the only possible scenarios.

Thanks. Here's part my concern. If I call MS for tech help with a professional version,
they want something like $400 for a service call. If I call for a Home edition, they want
something like $35 for an incident. That's the way I understand it as of about a year
ago. When I called then for NT 4.0 that was the story. A few years prior to that they
charged $95 for an incident on NT. I'm really a home user, not a corporation or business.
That's a big ouch if I have a serious problem. Fortunately, I've always been able to
solve them, but it's still aggravating in case I get into trouble.
