Where did you get those patches?
The ONLY place to get WinXP patches dependably is from Microsoft - and that
means DIRECTLY from Microsoft, NOT from some email that forges the MS "look
and feel". These phony messages that claim to be from MS are actually
carrying viruses or other malware.
In Internet Explorer, click Tools | Windows Update. This will take you to
Microsoft's site, where you can download critical updates and other updates.
These will automatically install after downloading.
It is important to visit Windows Update frequently (at least weekly). You
can set WinXP to automatically download updates and install them, or to
download them and let you know they are ready to install, or to just notify
you when updates become available. Details are on the Windows Update site.
