Upgrade not allowed from Pre-RC1 to RC2

I would like to upgrade from build 5536 to RC2, but when I launch setup and
enter the product key, I am not being allowed to upgrade - "Upgrade has been
disabled". I found KB article 918884 which gives reasons why an upgrade to
RC1 could be disabled - none of them apply; the volume is formatted NTFS, I
have 55 GB free space, and booted normally from hard drive.
After my first attempt to install an upgrade, I thought perhaps having
EZtrust antivirus beta running was interfering, so I uninstalled it, tried
again, still no go.
Is there a workaround that will allow me to upgrade? I really don't want to
do yet another clean install.
 
The other message that is displayed is:
"The upgrade cannot be started. To upgrade, you must be running Windows XP
with Service Pack 2 (SP2), or Windows Vista."
Anyone had a successful upgrade install from Pre-RC1 or earlier build?
