upgrade new hard disk

I just installed a new hard disk on my computer. How do I
move all program and system files to the new disk? I'd
like to leave the old hard disk as backup.

What do you mean you've installed the new HD on your computer? Have you put
Windows on it and set it up as the primary drive? Just install your old
drive as a secondary (you said you wanted to do that anyway) and copy them
over.

Define "just installed". Did you just plug it in? As primary or secondary?
Master or slave? Did you leave the old HD in place? Have you installed
WinXP on it?

As jch said, it may be as simple as plugging in the old HD as slave or
secondary and using standard Windows methods to move the files.

Of course, moving application files is not enough to let you run the
programs. Each application will have to be installed so that its Setup file
can write the proper entries into the Registry of your new WinXP
installation. And moving "system files" won't let you boot into WinXP; you
will have to run WinXP Setup to detect your hardware configuration and
customize WinXP to fit your computer.

Purchase Ghost, Drive Image or some similar application to copy your old
disk to the new. You may check with the vendor that you purchased it from,
many offer an app to do this.
 
I have a similar question. My hard drive is giving SMART error codes, so I've purchased a replacement. With Win9x I was comfortable with moving to a new drive. With WinXP Home, I'm less confident (given activation issues, NTFS, etc.). I have Ghost and Partitionmagic, but do not believe a simple transfer of the entire partition (yes, only one partition) will dance well with XP

It seems this would be a common topic, but my search of MS support has not turned up anything definitive. I'd be happy with a simple link to such info, if you have it, as well as any other advice/comments
