I am at a point now that my existing motherboard (Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe)and
CPU (AMD Athlon 3500+) can no longer accomodate some of the new devices. For
example, the transition between AGP to PCIE videlo cards. Further I heard
that soon Intel will come out with their latest power chip and as a result,
AMD will drop its prices by as much as 50%, a pretty good incentive to
upgrade.

My concern however is that most of my other PC components have been upgraded
and I wish to save as many of them as I can. I have 1.5 Gig of DDR400 memory.
I will have to get a PCIE video card. What criteria do I have to be aware of
regarding selecting upgraded motherboards and CPU and still keep most of the
existing components. Also do I have to reload my OS (WINxp) and do I have to
reactivate OS?

Apart from the fact that you can't use a PCI-e video card, what exactly is
wrong with your system?

The hw you require/use should be that needed to run whatever software you
use and unless you are a heavy gamer, with the latest games updateing to
PCIE will be of no advantage
There is a world of difference between real world benchmarks and lab
benchmarks.
Replaceing the mobo requires a winxp repair installation, and installing
drivers supplied with that mobo

Why upgrade unless you have a real good reason. What you have appears to be
pretty good.

Most components are likely to work except as you mentioned the video card.
Memory may be another issue DDR or DDR2

Typically you would have to make a repair install but may be required to
make a completely new install. You will most likely have to reactivate

Nothing significant is wrong with my system. My ATI X1600 video card
malfunctioned and there are not many AGP cards avaailable in the market. I
finally found an FX6800Xt from NewEgg.com which I ordered.

Thanks
