My brother-in-law has Windows ME and wnats to have XP. Somebody who wants to
charge a lot of money has told him you cannot upgrade ME to XP. I thought
you could.
Putting aside the usual arguements for and against upgrade over clean
install. can ME be upgraded with the appropriate XPSP2 CD? Is there a
cheaper upgrade CD or do you just buy the full one?

The upgrade CD will do it, but make sure the machine is capable.

As told you already, the upgrade CD will do the job.. however, you really do
need to be in possession of an ME CD, because if you have to re-install, you
will need an original ME CD as qualifying material..

You are correct and the "somebody" is wrong.

There is an Upgrade CD and since it's cheaper than the Full version and he
qualifies for it, that's what he should buy.

Thanks to Frank, Mike and Ken for the answers. Mike mentioned something I
forgot though - the upgrade CD would require the original ME CD at some point
(during the upgrade or only after the upgrade if needing to re-install?) so
I'd better make sure he has the CD somewhere!

Thanks again all
