Upgrade in another GPO - strange results

Hello,

In WIN2K SP4, one domain, I have 2 GPO's; GPO 1 publishes an installation of
application X version 1 ; GPO 2 assigns an installation of the same
application X version 2; the package of version 2 specifies that version 2
upgrades version 1 from GPO 1, is a mandatory upgrade for it, and should be
installed during logon. Both publications are in the User part of the GPO;
both GPO's are authorized for UserA.

I expect that UserA will get version 2 installed during logon.

Instead, he gets installed version 1. If I run GP results from GPO
Management Console, I see version 1 in Installed Applications, with Winning
GPO = GPO 1.

If GPO 2 publishes version 2 instead of assigning it, UserA in his
add/remove programs->add new programs sees version 1. GP Results indicate
that GPO 2 was applied to UserA, however, in the published applications it
shows version 1, and winning GPO = GPO 1. Enforcing gpo 2 does not help.

Could someone explain why the fact that version 2 is mandatory upgrade for
version 1 is ignored? and, further, why assigning version 2 makes assigned
version 1?

thanks,

Vadim,

I might post this in the Group Policy news group. I would guess that you
would either have to have assigned version 1 or published version 2 ( so
that both versions are the same ). I will play with this in a lab in the
near future ( but please do not hold your breath ). I can not promise that
it will be today or tomorrow or even the next day.

But this is an interesting question. I guess that I would ask why you are
publishing one and assigning the upgrade. Did you publish to the user
configuration side of things ( since you can publish only to the user side
configuration while you can assign to both computer and user configuration
side ) but assign to the computer configuration side? Assuming that you
have not done this due to the "If GPO 2 publishes version 2 instead" part.

What application is this? Does it have a native .msi file for both versions
or is this something that you have packaged? This may or may not have
anything to do with it!
