hello im upgrading my video card on an old machine

so i went to the shop.wanted to but a 6600GT for my PC and the store clerk comes up to me and says what board will i use it on.


so i tel him its a socket A board and 8x agp slot.the man refuses to sell the card so after a few Q&A's just went home.just not clear why they wont sell to me:confused:

here's my PC specs

Athlon XP
Asus A7v8x motherboard
512MB RAM
GeForce MX video card

anyhow if you can clear this up thanks:thumb:
 
Your motherboard supports AGP8X, As i am sure you know. I take it the card you picked up was AGP?

There are some AGP cards here if you haven't already seen them. :)

What was the card you were looking at?
 
go back to the store and give the clerk a good slap and ask to speak to someone that knows about computers, or we're you trying to buy a PCI-E version ?

as VR said you can use any AGP card, a 6600GT would give it some more punch, also what CPU do you have ?
 
what an idiot. even if he was looking at a pci-e 6600gt, why didnt he just give him an agp version/ equivalent?

you dont need him anyway just buy it off the net :p
 
i was planning on getting the 6600 agp version.so it should work on my mobo's AGP8x slot

anyways do i need a new PSU?? im only using a 300W PSU on this PC.
 
if its a generic one then it would be advisable to upgrade it to a decent 400W brand name one
 
ok thanks, will do get at least a 400W PSU:)

probably Tagan or are there any other PSU that are good but not very expensive as this machine is really old
and im just upgrading the GFX card so that me and my friends could play networked in the house for some

old games like Q3 and MOHAA:D
 
Well a word of warning, The PSU is just something you shouldnt skimp on. ;)

There are some good PSU's here (DO NOT even look at the Q-Tec one)

You could do a lot worse than one of these (top one) They get decent reviews and are a good budget psu.
 
i like sparkle. they also do a 700w power supply pretty cheap, which is interesting.

Dont wanna have too much power PotGuy ;)
I think you can get 900w psu's, im sure soon enough they will make 1Kw :D

They aready do make 1000W PSUs ... Enermax make one of the best. ;)

They are "designed" for multi-cpu/multi-core Computers ... Server class.

i wasnt saying it was the most powerful....!

i was just saying they do it cheaply, and it is good quality.
