I upgraded from Windows 98 to Windows XP, and have been in h@ll since then. I
have tried to use thier free outsourced support, but so far have spent dozens
of hours on long distance calls, mostly listening to muzak. My Windows 98
worked fine with my HP Deskjet series 5500 printer. At the upgrade it of
course no longer was able to recognize my printer, the driver being the one
for the old system. Eventually after hours being on hold, i was able to get a
techie from india, who downloaded the new driver, but the upgrade won't
recognize the printer. we tried turning all possible variations on and off,
but eventually we reistalled the windows upgrade in a different area (booting
from the CD). Well now this version of the upgrade works, but of course it
does not work with my files or programs, that are connected to the upgrade
that does not work. The techie seems to think he has helped me, but i beg to
differ. I should not have to choose between a printer and all my files and
programs.

Carey gives a link to use to get the printer drivers. Do that. Next,
navigate to
http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/CleanPrinterDrivers.htm#LexmarkDriver
and use that information to remove the present printer drivers from your
updated to Windows XP partition on the HD.

Next, shut the computer down and turn the [power off the computer and
printer. Disconnect the printer from the computer. Turn the computer on
and start Windows. Install the drivers according to the instructions. I
would try the install using the USB connection. Do not connect the
printer to the computer until the instructions indicate.

Let us know.

Both suggestions offered so far were eventually ones we did (backed up by
microsoft outsourced support). We did these, and all veriations on it, a
couple dozen times, to no avail. Next the techie installed a second
installation (booting from the CD) on a different part of the C drive, and
that one worked fine with the printer, but did not of course recognize any of
my other programs, which were tied to the upgrade installation I bought and
installed.

Now I would just migrate the programs over to the second installation, but I
am careless about saving old product codes, so for prgrams like the $600
adobe photo program I bought, I would have to buy again, probably 3 or 4
thousand dollars worth of programs accumulated in the past 6 years. So I am
stuck between having a printer or gaving my prgrams. I should not have to
have one or the other.

OK. Too bad there is a problem with the printer. I agree, it's a very
poor choice of scenarios. It's too bad that you did not keep your
product codes.

If you registered the programs, you might be able to call the product
support number for each program and get install codes.

So, now what? Sympathy is one thing, help is another.

We obviously have no idea what you tried since you have told us (twice)
little more than your experience with MS support. Interesting, perhaps,
but useless in helping anyone understand the problem. Also, you see to
imply that everything has been tried. If that is true, no one here can
possibly suggest anything more. What is there to suggest if everything
has been tried?
if your purpose is to complain about Microsoft "outsourced" support, it
might be more useful to use the contact information on MS' web pages to
contact someone who actually can take your complaint to the proper
people.

If you are interested is seeing if there is something else that might
solve the problem, we can explorer some options.

Since the system did work properly at one time, with Win98, the odds-on
favourite possibility is that Win XP update did not handle the change
from Win98 drivers to Win XP drivers properly. My suggestion was aimed
at overcoming that,

Was a "repair/restore" install of XP tried? Now, please tell us what you
have tried already in some detail.

David said ---> I upgraded from Windows 98 to Windows XP, and have

Your 1st mistake was upgrading to XP. What did you need to do that
for? If it aint broke, don’t try to fix it! MS’s XP upgrading S/W is
garbage. I’ve seen this happen a lot of times. The best, most trouble
free thing to do is to wipe your hard drive and do a clean install.
(Backup all of your created and captured data 1st, including email,
address book, Favourites, etc.) Even trying to reverse back to 98 will
most likely not work. You will be plagued with problems forever if you
don’t do a clean install. Sorry, but that has been my experience. You
will have to email proof of ownership to all of your S/W companies for
info on how to reinstall your S/W or find free serial numbers for your
S/W using P2P (Peer2Peer) networks. If you wanted to upgrade, you
would have had more success upgrading to Win ME. I use ME beautifully
on all of my PC’s. From taking MCSE and using Win NT, 2000 and XP, I
would never touch them unless I was a medium to large sized company.
Would you use a Mac truck tractor to go to the grocery store? Of
course not. So why use a Mac truck tractor operating system if you
don’t really need to?

You should consider becoming a medium to large sized company before the end
of 2006..
