I was given an old computer- GenuineIntel Pentium Processor 64MB RAM with
Windows 98. I have AOL 7.0. The computer is slow. What can I do to
speed
it up. Add memory?
You'll need to check what chipset is on your motherboard. Depending on the
board model it may have the i430TX chipset, which limits you to 64MB of
memory,
if it's be properly cached. Any memory >64MB isn't cached properly by the
chipset.
Here's a quote from Anandtech from 1997:
The only downside to this board is a limitation provided to us by our
friends at Intel with the i430TX Chipset, the limitation of 64MB of
cacheable memory should be the only reason not to go with this motherboard.
This is a very small downside for most users, however it can pose problems
for those of you looking to run Windows NT4 with over 64MB of RAM. On the
bright side though, the performance hit when using above 64MB of RAM is only
about 10 - 20%.
You'll have to decide whether to do >64MB. Chipset will decide it.
