If i perform an upgrade from xp pro which i bought to windows vista upgrade
would that make the xp key redundant? I ask this because i read in some
microsoft ulah or rules or whatever you call it that it makes your copy that
you upgraded from unusable again. If so that means i have to buy the full
edition if i want to keep my copy of xp pro or install win2000 first and
upgrade from that?

As always, the license for the operating system which you use as qualifying
media for an upgrade is now tied to the upgraded system. So yes, if you
want to keep your copy of XP Pro or Win2k, purchase a full version of Vista
and not an upgrade version.

Ok so if this is the case and i bought an upgrade copy and installed it over
xp pro and activated it and later on wanted to format and reinstall again.
Because xp pro is now not usable and cant use that to upgrade from and re
install. Would i then be able to use that current install of vista upgrade
and let me format again and reinstall it if you know what i mean?

You would still be able to reinstall XP as a basis for reinstalling Vista.
A better approach is to image the system following the Vista upgrade so that
you don't have to go through all that.
