Will I be able to upgrade from Home to Pro without having to install all my
program again

Three points:

1. The direct answer to your question: Yes. This is the easiest and
most likely successful of all possible upgrades, since so little has
to be changed.

2. Despite what I say above, there are never any guarantees. Things
*can* go wrong, and it's always prudent to be sure you have a backup
of anything you can't afford to lose before beginning.

3. Are you sure you want to do this? Are you aware that XP Home and
Professional are identical except that Professional includes a few
features (mostly related to security and networking) missing from
Home? Most home users don't need and would never use these extra
features and will see no benefits by upgrading.

Also note another point, not included in any of the above:
Professional allows ten concurrent network connections, and Home only
five.

Hi

Problem is that I spend 30 hour trying to connect my laptop to this computer
with XP Home... and reading all of Chuck's good advice... and nothing works
at all.. getting nowhere..

As far as I can figure out there is a few lack off possibilityes in Home
around networking..

I thought I will try to to put a Pro on ( have a free one from a scrappet
comp.) before going to the hillside :D

In that case, Professional will accomplish nothing for you.

There are two kinds of networking available in Windows XP; domains and
workgroups. Domains are used in places like large corporations,
universities, etc. Workgroups can be used anywhere.

With very few exceptions, all home user networks are workgroups. And
regarding workgroup support, it's identical in Home and Professional.
The difference in network support is regarding domains. Only XP
Professional, and not XP Home, can join a domain.

My own home network is a workgroup and I have XP Professional, XP
Home, and Vista Ultimate computers connected to it.

Almost certainly, upgrading to Professional will be nothing but a
waste of time and effort for you, even if you have a free copy.

For help with your networking problems, read here:

and ask specific questions in the newsgroup

Is Ericks talking about connecting with Remote Desktop which cannot enabled
on Win XP Home and is not mentioned here?

Cheers Ross
