Is there a special upgrade package (and price) to go from XP Home to XP
Professional? I've seen one XP Professional Upgrade package, but it seems
to be for going from Windows 98 or 2000 to XP Professional, and it doesn't
mention going from XP Home to XP Professional.
Thanks..
Jim

No, it is the same upgrade package.

Nope just buy the retail upgrade version. It will be the
easiest upgrade because its practically the same accept
that pro has some more security features for networking.
If you want my advice dont do it unless you have a
business or something

The regular retail upgrade package (or the even more expensive retail
full install package) is the only way of upgrading to XP Pro from XP
Home.

These upgrades generally work very well, as there is very little that
actually needs to be changed.

Before spending the money you need to make certain that you actually
need the relatively few features and functions that are found only in
XP Pro.

There are not many of these, and the following web sites decribe them:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/whichxp.asp
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/choosing2.asp
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_home_pro.asp

One difference which is not specifically mentioned in any of those
sites is that in a peer-to-peer network sharing configuration Windows
XP Home only allows 5 logins to a shared resource whereas XP Pro
allows 10.

Good luck

Thanks everyone for your responses..
Everyone mentioned needing to use the standard XP Pro Upgrade package.
However, in the last of the three articles referred to in Ron's message,
there is mention made of Microsoft offering a "step-up upgrade" to go from
XP Home to XP Pro. Is that available?

Thanks again..
Jim

Hi Jim,

What Paul T. means by "home user" is users of Win9x systems, he just wasn't
very clear in the way he wrote that (not exactly unusual for him, he likes
to muddy things). The "less expensive" step-up is the upgrade version of
WinXP Pro that will upgrade their home (Win9x) systems. As was stated by
others, there is no "XP Home to XP Pro" special, you simply need the regular
WinXP Pro upgrade disk.

That same one does XP Home to Pro too, though it is not mentioned on
the box, and is the only upgrade for the purpose that is available.
First make sure you *really* need one of the facilities that are
supported only in Pro - the systems are otherwise identical
