I wish to upgradefrom Home to professional, by doing so
will I be overwriting my hard drive and all my existing
software? Will I need to reinstall all my addon
application software?

If you perform the upgrade procedure correctly, then your
files and programs should remain intact.

1. Purchase the conventional "Retail Upgrade Version" of Windows XP Pro.
2. Uninstall any third-party antivirus or firewall programs.
3. Disconnect all peripheral hardware devices, but not the monitor, keyboard or mouse.
4. While at your XP Home desktop screen, insert the XP Pro CD in the CD drive.
5. Select the default "Upgrade" option.... DO NOT SELECT "New Installation".
6. Defrag your drive after upgrading.
7. Reinstall your antivirus program & turn-on the firewall.
8. Visit the Windows Update website and download the necessary updates.

While everything should remain intact assuming the instructions for
upgrading are properly followed, it is not safe to do this without a backup.
That will ensure your data remains intact if something goes wrong. I would
assume you have all the application disks so those don't need to be backed
up. If there are no problems, you shouldn't need to reinstall or restore
your backup but there are not guarantees. You may need to recreate some of
your settings.

Greetings --

If you've described this event accurately, it means that the
upgrade actually _fixed_ the problem. The C:\Programs File folder
should _not_ have been available to other computers on the network.
It's a protected system folder, and isn't supposed to be share-able.

It should cause any data loss, only cash loss as you won't
gain anything worthwhile.

You can fix the file share porblem by going in from the server and clicking into programs files and right clicking on the folders you want to share. You need to change the read only attritbute, take the check mark out of read only
