Upgrade from Windows 98

David Weddington

I am running Windows 98 on my home notebook computer and
want to upgrade the operating system. I have the required
memory and disk space. What do you recommend:
(1) Windows 2000 Pro
(2) Windows XP
Also, should I get the full version or the upgrade?

Thanks...

For home use I would recommend WinXP as it has most of the features of
Win2K, but is a little more 'user friendly' & has some slicker features. It
also has a larger driver database, so for many peripherals you don't need to
hunt around for drivers. If you prefer a more 'conventional' Windows feel,
Win2K might be better, but IMHO Win2K is better suited as a business OS. If
you can, get access to a PC with each of the OS's installed to try them out.

Depending on your level of expertise (or patience!), you would need to
consider whether you want to rebuild your PC from scratch at any point. The
upgrade version will require you to have Win98 installed before you install
the new OS. This means that if you want to rebuild your PC in the future,
you'll have to install two OS's instead of one. Obviously if cost is your
overriding criterion here, then go for the upgrade, but if you can afford
it, I would recommend the full OS.

Go with XP. The real choice is PRO or Home version of
XP. PRO costs more but has better file security and
Encrypted File System. EFS should be used on a laptop
encase it is lost. As for upgrade VS full, cost is the
deciding factor and you will not have to install 98 first
if you reinstall your XP system. If XP does not find an
OS during installation it will prompt you to insert the 98
CD.
