can you help me. I tried to upgrade my win98se to XP but halfway through it
says cant find a file h:/i386 iExplore
is one of the files it reports as missing. I thoght my disc may have an eror
so I took it back to the shop and exchanged it, however, I still get a
similar error that files are not there. I have checked the disc on my
brothers computer and the files are there. Any ideas??
fustrated!!

Brian,
I have tried to upgrade many 98 machines in the past and have had a 50/50 shot. I reccomend backing up the files and completely do a fresh install of XP instead of an upgrade. Even if the upgrade goes fine there is still a high chance of apps not working properly.

I am no tech, but also did XP Upgrade from W98SE. My
system was fine until I later converted from FAT32 to
NTFS and my system started freezing randomly.

My suggestion would be to search your W98SE o/s CD for
the needed files and try to install them. Is your
brother's machine W98 or XP? Either way, if the files
can't be found on the W98 CD, try copying them from his
machine to a floppy and installing them on your machine.
If your brother's system is NTFS, you may not be able to
install the files as Win98 is FAT32. BUT you might be
able to get around that by trying to install during the
actual Upgrade. Again, I'm not a tech to any degree so
all of this may be useless.

Also, make sure your system can easily handle XP. Hard
Drive size, amount of RAM, processor speed are the
biggest concerns. After that, are XP drivers for your
printer, modem, CD burner, etc. avaiable?

I have never done a Full/Clean Install of an o/s but am
seriously considering it. The general consensus is that
Full/Clean Install is better than an Upgrade, but that's
common sense to me. The only reason I purchased Upgrade
was the much lower cost and that personal files and
settings are usually saved. Of course, via CD burner I
backed-up my important/personal data before Upgrading
just-in-case, as should you. If you Full Install, its a
must because everything is erased; don't forget that.

Good luck to both of us! Take care - Jeff S.

I apologize...I re-read your post and realized you
checked the XP CD on your brother's machine and the file
was found on the CD. I thought you'd found the file on
his machine ie:hard drive. That's why I suggested
copying to a floppy. That is very strange, but maybe -
for whatever reason- your machine can't read the file
from the CD while his can. I wonder if your HD were
installed in his machine if the file(s) would be read and
install completed? If not, I would think that meant a
problem w/your HD. It also could be that your CD Rom
doesn't/can't read the file(s) and his can.

A heck of a process, but if you're willing to go thru all
the tedious tasks involved, you might end-up w/XP working
fine on your machine. But don't forget to back-up first!!
