Hi, what's the full error message? Are you trying to upgrade to Windows XP
Home or Professional?

Windows 2000 can not be upgraded to Windows XP Home, you need to go to
Pro.

You will also get that error if you have an OEM Windows XP.
OEM are designed for Clean Installation only, no upgrade capability.

Hello,

I get this incompatibility message when I try to install windows xp over windows 2000. Is there really an issue? If so, do I need to wipe the disk clean, then install xp? Not a real tech dude, just enough to be dangerous (to myself). The specific message says, "windows xp setup does not support upgrading from windows 2000 professsional to windows xp". What to do???

From pro win 2k pro to win xp pro. I indicated the exact message in the first post. I just bought this laptop and it came with the win 2k installed, has a certificate. I also have win xp pro, it came with my desktop.

Bob;
Are you trying to install the windows XP Pro that came with another
computer on this computer?
If so...
1. That probably will not work because of BIOS lock.
2. That violates the EULA you agreed to because it can only be
installed on one computer at a time, and also can not be transferred
regardless the condition of the original computer.
