My setup is a Compaq 6000 series computer with:

845G/GL/GV chipset (Brookdale)
P4 478 2.4ghz standard processor
512 mb 266mhz ddr ram
Asustek GeForce4 ti4200 4x agp card

I want to know what may be the best card for this system.
The Ti4200 isn't all that bad however it definitely lags for some apps.

I plan to increase memory on the system to one gig. Would increasing the
processor to 3 ghz w/hyper threading help much?

Gaming will get by far the best boost from a video card upgrade. I had a
buddy go from a 4400ti to a 9800pro and he said the increase was nice and
big. But you should look at a 6600 series nvidia, probably the best deal
atm. But I'm partial to ATI myself since getting such a good iq improvement
from my tnt2U to my radeon back in those days... :-)
Don't know how much nvidia has improved in 2D since then, they used to be
weak but I've read that they're good now. Many people now going digital out
to a flat panel anyway...

The 9800 Pro is pretty much the equal of the 6600GT until you start going
over 1024x768 OR using increased FSAA and AF settings. Then the 6600GT is
far superior. IMHO it's not worth investing in a 3.0Ghz HT P4 on a
proprietary box like this with slow ram and no o/c ability.

an 9800 PRO and an extra 512mb RAM will do very nicely.
See how your system feels then - if you still want more and you're flush get
the 3ghz CPU.

I have a 2500 barton 1gig ddr400 and went from a 9600xt to a
9800pro and was well plzd with the performance difference
A friend of mine went from a ti 4200 to my 9600xt and he was
overwelmed
