Upgrade from RC2 to Final Retail Product?

I hesitate to pose this question since I'm sure others have asked the same
question, it's just that I can't locate the thread.

Has Microsoft made any statement or comment, regarding being able to upgrade
from RC2 (5744) to the final retail version when it's available?

I think it's extremely unlikely, and Microsoft has probably said no, though
I hadn't specifically read anything about SP2. Based on what we've seen with
the last "upgrades" from previous builds, I think a fresh install is
definitely in store. But at least you don't have to reformat, though I'm
sure it's recommended. It will just dump any contents in Users, Windows, and
Program Files in Windows.old and leave the rest of the drive alone if you
wish to install Vista without reformatting.

My understanding is that you cannot upgrade to the final version (you will
have to format and reinstall, which is a better option if you want a smooth
running OS anyway)

Buy the released product and perform a clean install. Upgrades from a beta
software product are not a good idea, and are not usually supported anyway
(as an upgrade path).

How would you recommend saving the files etc that have been created during
the period of time I have used RC2? I am currently doing full image backups
but all I want to do is to be able to move programs and files to the clean
install when the final product is released.

Thanks for the response.

Your data files (pictures, documents, spreadsheets and such) should be safe. just back them up before installing the retail version of Vista.

Backup your personal files to the medium of your choice. You will have to
reinstall all applications again when Vista is available in the stores.

Or change the location of the folders to a different drive/partition

They said it was unlikely had your read the blurb when obtaining RC2. I
think you might consider moving data onto backup media and preparing for a
clean install of Windows XP/2003/Vista before your Vista RC2 copy expires.
