Hi.

I bought a PC which came with an OEM version of Win98. I have since
bought an upgrade to Win 2000. I'm now looking a build a new PC, which
won't come with any pre-installed OS. Can I use Win 2000 on my new
machine, provided I don't use either Win98 or 2000 on the old one? Or am
I going to have to fork out for a new OS due to the OEM restrictions on
the original Win98?

I tried to find this info on the microsoft web site, but had no luck.

Cheers

You're going to have to buy a new license for the new machine because the
OEM restriction on the 98 machine tie it to the first machine it was
installed on

I believe what you can do is try to install Windows 2000 on your new machine. Since it is an upgrade it will ask for a qualifying product. When that happens you remove the Windows 2000 CD-ROM and pop in your Windows 98 OEM CD-ROM. Then it will find the qualifying product. After which you remove that CD-ROM and put back in your Windows 2000 CD-ROM. And continue the installation.

Are you saying that if it lets me install, then it must be legal? I can't
imagine that's the case.

If I can get Win98 cheaper than Win 2000, can I buy a full version of
win98 and use my existing win2000 upgrade? I don't see anything wrong
with that, do you?

I don't see anything wrong with that either. Unless you have the 2000
upgrade already installed, because the license is for one installation

That didn't happen until Windows XP

He didn't state if the Upgrade is an OEM or a Retail. And I have never
heard of an Upgrade OEM. An OEM is tied to the computer it is installed on
but a Retail copy can be moved without problems........as long as it is
uninstalled from the computer it was previously on. In other words, a
Retail copy can only be on one computer at a time but can be moved to
another computer as long is it is removed from the previous computer. If
this has changed please advise.

I doubt that was the intent. The suggestion was for a method to
successfully use the "upgrade" source. Clearly one license = one
installation.

What I told you may be a way to install the upgrade. Heck you could even install the OEM and then upgrade to Windows 2000. I don't understand your concern with the legality of it. You purchased it. What more legality do you need then that? You have an OEM license or you should have. I received an upgrade from Microsoft themselves to upgrade my OEM Windows 98 to Windows 98 SE. I did not receive a license when I got the upgrade. But I assumed to install it I was legal since they gave it to me. Your OEM license entitles you to install anything that uses the product that corresponds to that license.

Yes, you can do a clean install with XP upgrade as long as you have a
qualifying CD of a previous OS

Even XP will _install_ as I understand it.
