Hi All,

our company network is going to upgrade from NT4.0 to wins 2000. Also will
install the AD and exchange 2000.
We have 3 offices at different location which are located at USA, HK and
China. Between 3 office we have the frame relay
lines linked up. Each office has it own domain name like USA ( ABC.com ) HK
( ABC.com.hk) and China (ABC.com.cn).
All our office's email addresses are base on their domain name. We want to
keep the email addresses without any change.
Also we want to centralize the control at HK office.

Which way is the best for this situation? Single forest with multi-domains?
Multi-forest?

Best Regards,
GARY.

You should use different domains/single forest if you have different
security policies for every location, and If you need to keep WAN
replication at minimum (only GC will replicate), but it will increase
administration. Single domain model with tree sites (in your case) is easier
to maintain, but you can not have different password policies fo every site
and your WAN replication will be higher. I would not consider multiple
forests except if you have a valid reason to do so.

Thanks for your reply.
Actually I am not sure how can I setup the network as I request below.

Between 3 office we have the frame relay
lines linked up. Each office has it own domain name like USA ( ABC.com )
HK ( ABC.com.hk) and China (ABC.com.cn). All our office's email addresses
are base on their domain name. If I setup the root forest domain name is
ABC.com then the tree domain will become XXX.ABC.com. How can I setup the
network with 3 different domain name (ABC.com, ABC.com.hk and ABC.com.cn)
linked together and have the advantage of AD? Also, Exchange server use
X.400 connector to connect 3 offices. Is there any problem for the
email service? Also is there any examples for me for reference?

Thanks in advance.

AD forest can have acb.com name and can contain thee different trees
abc.com.hk, abc.com.cn you don't have to follow forest root namespace. You
also don't have to use your internet DNS namespace to name your AD domain.
You can as well go with abc.local , hk.abc.local and cn.abc.local (or .com).
If your security requirements don't need different password policies and
different administration, then you can go with one big domain with tree
sites (us, hk and cn). There should be no problem for email service. Which
Exchange wersion you are using ?
I would suguest you to visit www.microsoft.com/ad site and get some
whitepapers on ad configuration. It can provide you with good samples.

thanks for your reply.
We will use exchange 2000 for our email system. Each office will use their
email address HK (@ABC.com.hk) China (@ABC.com.cn) etc. Is it single forest
multi trees can handle this?
Also, the first domain (which is the root forest domain) setup in HK site
(which is the head office and more users than other office) is it a good
choice? After the first domain is established, other offices tree domain can
link to HK and setup the trust. Is it correct?

Thanks.

Exchange server can be configured to host any domain name and it is not
limited to your forest DNS domain name. On the other hand, you can also
configure your forest, to have additional UPN (User principal names) apart
from the DNS name of your domain, so you can match your email address for
logon name. like (e-mail address removed) for username.
