Everything I do on my computer is a chore now. I can take a shower in the time it takes to open a file. Nothing works, Word does whatever it wants to, if I defragment and re-boot - I have to defragment again. I tried wiping out my hard drive and re-installing ME then upgrading to XP again. Now it's even worse. I hate XP. I am beside myself - I do not understand why I paid $100.00 to lower my system's capabilities. I tell it to give me a word count and a reading level on things and it will not. Everytime I open a document - it goes on about templates and Macros. I am writing a book and everytime I turn around it has saved the book is 'hidden files'. Please help me. I am at the end of my rope. I am about to wipe out everything again, re-install ME, and throw the XP upgrade in the trash. Thank you in advance for your time and help

Did you check that your system can handle XP?.. is your installed hardware
up to the job?.. did you know that the 'retail upgrade' vesion does not
require that ME is installed first?.. as long as you have an MS WinME cd
(not just a recovery cd), you can do a clean install of XP on your
computer.. you will, of course, have to back up data, and reload your other
applications.. very early versions of MS Word may not work, but all
versions from and including MS Word 97 do..

If XP is 'playing up', there will be a good reason for it.. if XP really was
trash, nobody would be using it, but that is so untrue.. blame your lack of
knowledge before telling us that XP is trash..

Hello Mike

Yes, my system is fully capable of handling and XP upgrade - I even downloaded and ran the file I have seen yo
recommend to other people to determine such. I do have a lack of knowledge, that is why I do not buy fancy
smancy programs and stick with little programs and upgrades that appear to be made for non-experts. When I d
get over my head, I am very lucky to be friends with my neighbor who is a software developer, truely knows a lot
about computers, and is always willing to help. My upgrade to XP has driven him nuts - he can find no reason for
it to be operating at a snail's pace. I spent a couple weeks going back and forth with a Microsoft technician over e-mai
with him trying to help me but by the time he had me in the motherboard changing things around, the whole projec
became more than I had bargained for. I just wanted to make my system run a little better and I was very proud and
happy to afford XP and to have it on my computer. I have heard many people say that the upgrade is full of problem
while to the program is not. I don't know. I just know that the way XP has worked for me - in my humble way of
doing things - it has made computer life miserable and I am ready to throw it in the trash...not call it trash

Thank you for trying to help. Sue

If you have the full version of a previous Windows operating system on cd,
it is best to do a clean install.. if you have a system that has two hard
drives installed, a clean install is made easier because you do not have to
find a way to backup important files.. it works like this..

Install a new harddrive and then partition and format it.. boot from the XP
cd.. when asked, insert the Win 98/ME cd into the drive as proof of a
previous operating system.. continue on, following screen instructions.. at
the end of this, you will have a clean and, hopefully, working XP
installation.. the next step is to load your anti-virus program, set up your
internet connection, ensure that the XP firewall is being used, and connect
to the internet to get all Windows critical updates and also anti-virus
updates.. so far so good..

Next.. install your old drive as a slave to the new one.. use the 'storage
manager' in 'administrative tools' to recognize the old drive if it is not
picked up immediately.. you can now re-install any apps, copy important
stuff to a folder on the new drive, import your address boof and e-mail
messages.. when you consider that you have saved as much as you need, you
can clear the old drive of all info, and then use it as your file backup
drive.. this way, you will not lose important data in the event that the
boot drive fails..

Good luck

Mike
