If you have the full version of a previous Windows operating system on cd,
it is best to do a clean install.. if you have a system that has two hard
drives installed, a clean install is made easier because you do not have to
find a way to backup important files.. it works like this..
Install a new harddrive and then partition and format it.. boot from the XP
cd.. when asked, insert the Win 98/ME cd into the drive as proof of a
previous operating system.. continue on, following screen instructions.. at
the end of this, you will have a clean and, hopefully, working XP
installation.. the next step is to load your anti-virus program, set up your
internet connection, ensure that the XP firewall is being used, and connect
to the internet to get all Windows critical updates and also anti-virus
updates.. so far so good..
Next.. install your old drive as a slave to the new one.. use the 'storage
manager' in 'administrative tools' to recognize the old drive if it is not
picked up immediately.. you can now re-install any apps, copy important
stuff to a folder on the new drive, import your address boof and e-mail
messages.. when you consider that you have saved as much as you need, you
can clear the old drive of all info, and then use it as your file backup
drive.. this way, you will not lose important data in the event that the
boot drive fails..
Good luck

Hello Mike,
Yes, my system is fully capable of handling and XP upgrade - I even
downloaded and ran the file I have seen you
recommend to other people to determine such. I do have a lack of
knowledge, that is why I do not buy fancy
smancy programs and stick with little programs and upgrades that appear to
be made for non-experts. When I do
get over my head, I am very lucky to be friends with my neighbor who is a
software developer, truely knows a lot
about computers, and is always willing to help. My upgrade to XP has
driven him nuts - he can find no reason for
it to be operating at a snail's pace. I spent a couple weeks going back
and forth with a Microsoft technician over e-mail
with him trying to help me but by the time he had me in the motherboard
changing things around, the whole project
became more than I had bargained for. I just wanted to make my system run
a little better and I was very proud and
happy to afford XP and to have it on my computer. I have heard many
people say that the upgrade is full of problems
while to the program is not. I don't know. I just know that the way XP
has worked for me - in my humble way of
doing things - it has made computer life miserable and I am ready to throw
it in the trash...not call it trash.
