Upgrade from Home to Pro

This would seem to be a simple thing to offer and accomplish, yet I can't
find anywhere to download anything that would upgrade it, with the exception
of buying the full version of Pro. That seems stupid to me when most of Pro
is already in Home, why not offer a patch or something?

Am I just looking in the wrong places?

No - you are not looking "in the wrong places" - because there is no
"download" or "patch" to upgrade you from Windows Xp Home Edition to
Windows XP Professional Edition (legitimate one, anyway.) In other words -
what you are looking for does not exist - whether you believe that to be
stupid or not (and no matter if one is to agree with you) - that is just not
the way things are or have been for the past 5 years or so.

Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home Edition are not the same
product. If you wish to upgrade Windows XP Home Edition to Professional -
you *do* have to buy the full retail or upgrade edition of Windows XP
Professional.

First - what in Professional do you think you need that Home is not
providing?
- EFS?
- Ability to join a domain?
- More easily accessible control over multiple users?
- Something else?

Second - what lead you to believe that because you had purchased Windows XP
Home edition (which is usually $100 less expensive than Professional), you
could "patch" this system at no cost (or little cost) to a different
operating system? While the two do have MANY MANY things in common - there
is obviously something in Professional you think you need - so there is a
definite difference there. :-)

While I cannot speak for Microsoft on why there is no "patch or something" -
I would assume that the underlying code is perhaps just "too different" for
a patch to properly take into account everything. It might miss something
or it may be unable to actually make the changes "on-the-fly" that would be
necessary to complete such an upgrade. Then again - it may be simple
economics and license management. You bought and paid for Windows XP Home
Edition. Most people do not *need* the extra features of Professional -
very few do, in fact. And when they do - they simply purchase the upgrade
edition of Windows XP Professional for about $175-$190ish or (if they can)
the academeic upgrade version for $80-$100ish. Some may even be willing to
completely format their system and purchase the OEM version for
$120-$150ish. Others get lucky and may go to an educational institution
where it may cost as little as $5 to get tthe upgrade edition!

Unless you have a very expensive MSDN subscription, Microsoft operating
systems (excluding time-bombed beta versions) have *never* been
available for downloading.

That seems stupid to me when most of Pro
is already in Home, why not offer a patch or something?

Yes, you're definitely looking in the wrong place.

1) Go to store/shop that sells computer software.

2) Purchase Windows XP Professional Upgrade.

3) Return home.

4) Insert installation CD in PC's CD drive and follow the on-screen
prompts and instructions to install application and desired additional
features.

An upgrade to Windows XP Pro is a smooth transition and will not affect your
current programs or files if you use the following procedure:

1. Purchase a conventional "Retail Upgrade Version" [boxed] of Windows XP Professional.
2. Uninstall your antivirus program.
3. Perform a backup of your important documents and files to a CD, DVD, or other backup media.
4. Disconnect all hardware peripheral devices, except the monitor, keyboard and mouse.
5. While running Windows XP Home, insert the Windows XP Pro CD in the drive and select
the default "Upgrade" setup option. [Do not select "New Installation"]
6. Visit the Windows Update site to download all the critical updates.
7. Reinstall your antivirus program, then defrag your hard drive.

Thank you for the POLITE reply to my question. Sorry Shenan and Bruce that
you took it so personally. It was just a simple question. An answer to at
least one of your questions, is that I bought Home because I assumed they
were close enough to allow me to do what I wanted easily. NOT because I'm
trying to screw Bill Gates out of $100 (I know he's on hard times right now).

I don't know if I CAN'T do what I need to do with the Home Edition, I just
expected it to be simpler. But it seems that everywhere I've found
information, it was suggested that the options were only available in the PRO
Edition. Had I known that I would have bought that one in the first place.

There's no need to get your panties in a bunch and be rude.

Seemed reasonable and fully answered your question.

You asked if you were looking in the wrong place.. I told you "no".

You asked if there was a patch to go from "home to pro" and I told you no
such thing existed and my guesses as to why.

You stated that you thought it was "stupid" if there was no patch to Windows
XP Home to Professional and I gave you the reasons that would make it "not
stupid".

Heck - I then proceded to explain the difference between different versions
and how you might be able to resolve your problem with the least money
spent. I even asked you why you might be needing Windows XP Professional -
because some people think they do when in reality - they do not.

Which part was rude?

I would be interested in where in Toronto, I might be able to get a $5.
upgrade from Home to Pro. My brother bought me the computer to use to
develop and upgrade his website. Unfortunately, it was bought in a limited
sale and I had thought that it had everything that I needed to work on the
website. However, I found out that I am not able to connect to the network
which although, inconvenient for passing files, this can be accomplished by
other means. I am also using it to update another website which requires the
download of software which will only work with a registered version of
Windows XP Pro. I have no income at the moment and I would not be justified
in asking my brother to pay for the upgrade. Would you or someone else be
able to steer me in the right direction?

Are you a student at an educational institution that has signed an agreement
with Microsoft?
If so - contact the central computing services offices of said educational
institution and ask them.

Otherwise - you are not one of the 'lucky' ones I mentioned. ;-)
