Upgrade from 128 to 256MB

Hello!

You can test amount of installed memory by checking properties of My
Computer icon.
You should see 256 MB RAM.

If you have 128 MB instead, probably you should look into the BIOS.
If you have two memory chips with incompatible formats, system will use
only one of them.

Actually, yes there is something you MUST do. When XP is installed it sets a
manual swap file size for the amount of installed RAM, when you upgrade the
RAM XP does not adjust for this. You should go into the performance tab of
system properties and set the swap file to Windows managed.

Don't think that's right - the default is Windows managed AFAIK........

All of the installs I have done (too many to count) set a custom swapfile
size based on the installed RAM, One I completed Friday was set this way,
every install I ever remember doing was set this way. I am actually doing
one now so I'll check it when it's complete.

No. The maximum size of the pagefile is set by Windows at 1.5 times RAM
when the operating system is installed. If you add RAM after Windows is
installed the maximum pagefile size will not be changed, you have to
change it manually.

Totally unnecessary, unless the OP has changed from the default of
"Windows Managed."

We already established that the default is NOT windows managed, it is set to
a fixed minimum and maximum, look at it after you do a clean install.

No. "we" haven't established any such thing. You've incorrectly
asserted such (and have been corrected by several people), which isn't
the same thing, at all.

it is set to
a fixed minimum and maximum,

Not on any fresh installation I've ever seen.

look at it after you do a clean install.

I have. On literally hundreds of clean installations.

I just checked about 5 of our 50 dells at work. The default is Windows
Managed.

My home PC default is Windows Managed.

Correction: I meant to say the default is *NOT* Windows Managed.
Sorry.
