We have two copies of XP with sp2, one of then was on a machine with 550 mgz
processor, the other one was on a machine with 2.4 mgz processor. Because
most of our important files was on the slower machine I wanted to just put
the hard drive with the files on the faster machine. But when I put the hard
drive with the files on the faster machine it would not even show that it had
a OS on it. But when I put the other hard drive back in the faster machine it
booted right up. So at the moment we have two copies of XP but because of not
being able to get the hard drive with the files to boot up on the faster
machine we have both copies on the same computer and can not put the smaller
hard drive on the slower computer because of this problem. My question is Has
mircosoft made it this way or am I missing something in moving the hard
drives around with I did with Windows 98 with no problem?

Your OEM license dies with the computer it was originally installed on. The
boot start drivers for things such as your drive controller are different
hence the non-starting problem. You can slave the drive to the faster
machine and copy the data files over though or use a crossover cable and
transfer the data through the network interface.
