I would like to upgrade my Win98 machines to WinXP, but I can not afford
another Win Office upgrade also. If I upgrade to WinXP will my Win2000
applications (Excel/PowerPoint) work ?

Yes, your Microsoft Office applications will work.
Make sure your Office version is fully updated before
upgrading to Windows XP.

You need to visit the Office Update web site and download
all the updates available for Office 2000, beginning with
Service Pack 3 for Office 2000.

Thanks for the quick reply. One of the reasons that I want to upgrade to XP
is that my internet capability was lost (with a security upgrade that went
south). And I do want to use the improved XP product on these two machines.
Do I really need to update Office 2000 before upgrading to XP ?

Yes, they will work.
Before upgrading be sure your machine is virus and spyware free.

Run an updated anti-virus.

Check for and remove malware.

Carey may have had different experience with this but I wouldn't. In fact,
I would uninstall Office. Install XP. Then install Office and update it.
Reason: A different set of files is installed for Win98 than what is used
for WinNT/XP.

PS: Leaving Office 2000 in place (updated or not) during the Windows
upgrade is okay too. If you run into any problems with the Office programs
after it's done, run a repair from the Office CD and double check updates.

And don't forget to turn OFF your anti-virus before running the install...
Having AV running during an upgrade can cause lots of issues.

Upgrading a computer that's having problems isn't a good idea. Usually the
problems follow along, and sometimes they get a lot worse. If you want to
try the upgrade, be sure you have everything important backed up before you
start, so if you have to do a clean install you have nothing to lose.
