Don't recommend updating the BIOS from Windows.

I would use either the flash utility in the BIOS or a bootable floppy...
both will require a "floppy" device.

There is no XP Corporate - you either have XP Home or XP Pro. Either
way, the update process is the same if you update from a bootable
floppy.

Ben,

I used a floppy and when the bios has been updated, the machine boots but
XP refuses to start and I get a message saying System32\drivers\ntfs.sys
is corrupted. If I restore the bios with the previous version (without
doing anything more) the machine starts normally. An idea?

There is no XP Corporate

AFAIK, there is a volume licensed version of XP Pro that requires no
activation that typically large corporations use and as such is therefore
different from off-the-shelf XP Pro. The original poster thought this
difference may be relevant. Just because pirated versions of one of these
were called "XP Corporate Edition" doesn't mean that legitimate ones can't
be called the same. Microsoft and shills appear bent on suppressing the use
of this name but IMO it seems very appropriate - A modified edition that
corporations use. Whatever, you knew exactly what he meant.

Hmm... Thats a bit odd... I would expect "NTLDR Missing" or similar, but not
ntfs.sys.

I take it you are not overclocking?

I'm not just a number. To many, I'm known as a String...

I got this in the past. What does that mean?

It means NTLDR is missing. :-P

NTLDR is, as far as I can tell, what gets called directly from the boot
loader. So your hard disk has an MBR (Master boot record) that the BIOS
attempts to run. If it exists on that drive (or a CD drive, or a floppy,
or...) then it will run. The boot loader that Window NT/2000/XP installs
will attempt to run NTLDR, I'm not sure how it determines where this file
is, but when you shift drives around it can change and the boot loader will
no longer be able to find it.

Basically it's the NT Loader and if it can't be found, NT (or 2K/XP) won't
load.

I don't want to get in a flame ware over this, I suspect you don't
either. The only legitimate versions of XP Pro that don't require
activation - XP Corporate Edition as some might call it - are owned by
volume license users. If the poster has a "legal" copy of it than the
PC is owned by a volume license user who surely has an IT department
that can handle a BIOS update. Otherwise, it is a pirated version.

I have the exacr same problem as the original poster.

A7n8x-e, xp pro
I want to add when you go in to the bios and change something,
computer will not boot giving same error as original poster has. To
get the machine to boot I reflash using bios flah utility to 1008 bios
and all is fine. Any ideas?

Thanks
John

Isn't the only diference between XP "pro" and XP "corporate" versions the
registration number? Or is there also something different on the
CD -different files, etc?

What is being referred to as "XP Corprate" is identical to XP Pro with
one exception - it does not require activation.

I used a floppy with Aflash utility and got the same result. I had to
flash again with the former bios and all went OK!!!!!

Otherwise, it is a pirated version.

And that's relevant to the original post? Perhaps we should rename
this group to alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.asus.non-pirates? In the
meantime can I suggest that we leave this shit alone and get on with
addressing the original problem.
