hi
im a novice so bear with me if i make any faux-pas.
i have just upgraded from 98 to xp, but had immense
difficulties doing so. as a result i have lost some data,
but think/hope that it is still on my comp somewhere and
in some form.
firstly when i tried to upgrade i uninstalled all the
software that was incompatible, but it said that my modem,
printer and digi cam drivers werent compatible. anyway for
some reason it continued installing.
all of a sudden with just 20 mins of setup left it said
that setup couldnt contine and then went to another box
which said fatal error and that the comp would be restared
ands= if the same prob occured to go to cancel win xp
setup when comp restarted. i tried this but there was no
option to cancel win xp. so it tried to finish setup and
once again it failed and the same boxes appeared saying
setup cant complete.
eventually i booted from the cd and went to windows setup
in a "dos type" mode eventually it completed and i hoped
everything would remain intact. when i looked in the c
drive, i found some oddly named files and some of my data.
such as "user~tmp.@01" which any of the stuff that was
saved was in.
however, most but not all of my stuff in "desktop" had
gone.oddly, in user~tmp.@01, all the folders where my data
was in, where intact but the actual data wasnt. this is
why i think it may be on my comp somewhere. can anyone
help me?
