how can you tell if it is critical or not?
When you go to the Windows Update section on MSN, you can get it to list the
critical updates and the less serious ones.
You can get it to tell you what each update fixes. Thus you can determine
whether your system needs the update or not.

I must tell you that critical updates tend to have a generic description
such as "Microsoft has found a serious problem which can allow a external
user to obtain control of your system and perform various misdeed. This
update fixes this problem."
That is about as definite as a serious fix description needs to be.

Jim answered your Critical or not question.
If you have Update configured to "automatically" download and install you
will get every update critical or not
Change the Update to "notify when available but don't download
This way you get a little message saying updates are available where you can
then go to the Update website using
Internet Explorer an let it scan your system....it will then inform you of
what you "need" and mark them as Critical or otherwise.
You can see them and their descriptions and then decide which ones to
download...critical ones should be.
Software updates for hardware installed should come from the Manufacturer of
the hardware.

Starting another thread just confuses things, Claire. In case you missed
my reply to you, here it is again:

1, Visit
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

2. When you get a choice of Express or Custom, choose Custom.

3. Wait. :-)

4. Look at the left-hand column. "High Priority" should be highlighted.
That is the same as "Critical." You want to install (usually) only "High
Priority" updates.

*That* is how you can tell. :-)

And in the future, please stick to your original thread!
