Sorry for the confusion--I really should have posted that as a new thread.
Definition updates always have the same KB number--they are viewed, I think,
as revisions.
There have been nearly zero definition update problems that don't have
simple explanations posted since approximately 3 weeks ago or so when some
change was made to the process which has improved things--so searches are
not as helpful as you might think. We will still see definition update
problem posts as the Microsoft Antispyware users convert over to Windows
Defender--because of the change in the update mechanism which results in
many corporate users being unable to update directly.
Definition updates are now delta updates--meaning that the file is quite
small, and contains just the info needed to bring a base (and much larger)
set of updates to current status.
So--if you have a machine which effectively doesn't have access to
definitions, you need both the base update set and the current delta update
set. What I posted was the base update set.
And all of this is detail which almost no one needs to worry about--the
average user should just enable autoupdate, and not worry about it.
