I recently added XP (an old version from our 4 year old Dell) to a used lap
top. When I use the Microsoft Update tool, will that automatically pull in
all updateds required? I was able to find a link to specifically get SP2 but
not SP1 (or should i be looking for SP1a)

Update will get you all updates and SPs... And SP1(a) is not needed, as SP2
includes everything in SP1...

I still have windows xp version 5.1 2001 on my computer. I have been
prompted to upgrade to SP2, but I get the message that it is not compatible.
I thought I had to get SP1 and work my way up to SP2, but according to what
you are saying that is incorrect. What do I need to do to get compatible?

Have you made certain that your computer is ready for SP2? Some computers,
for instance, need an update to the BIOS.
There is a checklist of things to do before installing SP2. And one of
those is that your computer must be as free of malware
as possible.

"Not compatible"? Please quote the *exact* text of the message,
verbatim. When do you get the message?

Yes, that is incorrect. All previous updates, including SP1, are
included within SP2.

Ken, please reply to the OP on this matter. I don't have a problem.

Do you mean that you bought the XP disk in 2001?
The correct version of all XP releases is 5.1 (build 2600)
